elliejane: storyteller girl (winter)
Up to last weekend there were still three Farscape episodes I hadn't seen all the way through. Daedelus Demands, Icarus Abides and Different Destinations. Now there are only two.

I am fairly rabid when it comes to Farscape. Got all the dvd's and then some. WENT TO BURBANK! I say this to demonstrate that I am not some fly by nighter fan who didn't watch some eps because I just missed em! Oh no...this was deliberate.

Cut tagged for spoilers even though everyone will have seen these eps ('cept me!) )

It was brought home to me that I can see the appeal of shows where you don't deeply emotionally connect with your characters and where bad things don't happen. Or at least bad things that leave your characters traumatised for weeks and weeks never to be the same again, don't happen.

There are some shows where you can sit down to them as if they were a slice of apple pie - tasty, filling, sweet but a little spicy, a light hand on the pastry. And you know it won't be too tart and you won't break your tooth on anything. There is something to be said for a show that is like a dessert and where you won't angst too much, you won't cry, you'll be entertained and then you'll go and do the ironing. Or whatever.

Of course, I don't LOVE THOSE SHOWS WITH A PASSION.

But maybe it's a trade off? The shows which catch you by the throat and demand you connect with them, give you characters who enthrall and whom you want to take home and protect, and just darn love? Maybe by the very act of connecting with them, these shows are no longer dessert; they are no longer something easy to eat and watch. They are a different and inventive menu, and you know you can't just watch and then do the ironing because you'll be sat staring with disbelief at the screen, or sobbing into a cushion. This is not always something you want to put your feet up with at the end of the day.

It's something which has always made me wonder vaguely...did Farscape not gain huge amounts of viewers simply because some folks just don't want to be put through the emotional wringer when they switch on the tv? And maybe the reason that Farscape got the very tenacious viewers it did was because once you do commit to letting yourself go through the wringer for someone you don't give up on them that easily.
