A word to the wise here, or rather, a word to the flist. And that word, ladies and gentlemen, is SERENITY. Go see it if you haven't already!

I've just got back from seeing it for the second time (the first being at a screening) and it is STILL fantastic. Even better I went with a total Firefly virgin. ALL he's heard about Firely is the garbled bits and pieces I've told him, and heck, I went not much further than, "folks in a spaceship". I think he only suggested we go see it as I was making it obvious I'd go on my own if needs be. Bless him :)

And here is where you can quote me:

He'd never seen Serenity before and he thought it was fantastic. Felt there were many layers to it. He said that after only seeing a film a couple of hours long, he felt as if with this crew he'd met family. There was no feeling of distance or oddness at the crew's relationships with each other, no feeling of a gaping hole of backstory that he should have known.

He KNEW of the series because of me, but didn't know which characters were regulars in the series, didn't know what the series covered. And STILL the movie worked for him. On many levels. He loved the witty one liners and loved that the weren't the mainstay of the film. There was humour, but it wasn't the only hook, and at one point he was anticipating a one liner and it didn't happen and something else did and he thought it great to be caught off guard like that.

I won't say much else as I want this to be spoiler free, and to be honest although we talked alot about it, I had to rein myself in from just gleeeing at him like a fangirl. We'd come out of the film, were walking down the corridor into the lobby where folks were buying popcorn etc, and I say "So did you like it?" and he says "It's fantastic!" and I JUMP UP AND DOWN. SEVERAL TIMES.

And he made the comparison to Star Wars!!! Said it parts had reminded him of the first SW film, was better than the more recent three, and that Mal reminded him at one point of Han Solo!

This is what I call a result :) Because he is not even a sci fi geek like me.

Dude. That's great! *bouncy huggles*

I know a few sci-fi geeks, and non-geeks alike. I shall have to see how many of them I can convince to come with me. Hee.

(I know I said on the DB that I'd wait till DVDage, but you know, random convos and talking about films. Who knows where it might lead...?)

:)

::bouncy huggles back:: I saw that! Don't wait for dvdage! GO now! Now now now! Well, not NOW. It's like, half 12, lol.

I've seen a couple of reviews this weekend that didn't even mention the Firefly connection, just mentioned Joss Whedon as Buffy's creator, and that the film was a rollicking good ride.

And what really got me was that in the Express film reviews, Oliver Twist got a headline, a huge photo and nigh on 2 columns of talk talk...BUT the talk talk was all slating it and the film was given 2 stars. And yet Serenity which got merely 2 column inches got 3 stars! THREE! The highest rated film of the bunch that were reviewed and it is tucked away on the last column!

Sighs. Being a tad too excited about all this, considering its not Farscape! But, darn it, the movie deserves to do well! ::gets off soap box:: Lol

Ok, OK! LOL. I like you when you're bouncy*. Tis fun! :)

I shall harangue a friend or two (*crosses fingers*). Although I can imagine the conversation going, "So, you know how I said I owe you a drink...?"

Hee! Yay for brilliant reviewage!! I think that is great, actually, considering Roman Polanski's supposed to be a film God or something...

Ooh, and all the trailers on TV say about Joss being Buffy's creator, but no mention of Firefly - my mum actually laughed at one of the lines which, I think, was Mal asking another guy if he wanted to be in charge of the ship, and when he said yes, Mal was like...Oh... Hehehe :)

*I like you anyway, but you know what I mean... :)
